Frequently asked questions
What is WHOIS?
WHOIS is an open internet protocol that returns domain registration data — such as the registrar, creation and expiry dates, nameservers, and domain status — from authoritative registry and registrar servers. This site also uses RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol), a structured, JSON-based successor that delivers consistent results across TLDs.
Is this service free? Do I need an account?
Yes, it is completely free with no registration required and no daily query limit. Just type a domain name or IP address into the search box on the home page.
Which TLDs are supported?
All common TLDs worldwide, including legacy gTLDs (.com, .net, .org), every ccTLD (.tw, .jp, .uk, etc.), and new gTLDs (.app, .dev, .ai). The service routes each lookup to the appropriate registry's WHOIS or RDAP server automatically.
Can I look up IP addresses?
Yes — both IPv4 and IPv6 are supported. IP lookups return the ASN, network range (CIDR), owning organization, geolocation, and abuse contact information.
Is the data real-time?
Every lookup contacts the authoritative WHOIS/RDAP server of the relevant registry or registrar live. Results are cached briefly per domain to reduce upstream load. No stale offline database is used.
Why are some registrant fields redacted?
Since ICANN's post-GDPR policy, registrars mask personal fields (registrant name, email, phone) with REDACTED FOR PRIVACY. That redaction comes from the upstream WHOIS record itself, not from this site.
What is the difference between WHOIS lookup and DNS lookup?
WHOIS queries the domain registration layer — who owns the domain, which registrar manages it, when it expires — maintained by registries and registrars. DNS queries the resolution layer — which IPs, mail servers, or TXT records a domain points to — served by authoritative nameservers. They answer different questions; this site supports both WHOIS/RDAP and DNS record lookups.
Can I look up a domain's WHOIS history?
The /history route tracks WHOIS and DNS change snapshots, but only for domains that have already been queried through this site. The route is excluded from search-engine indexing so it cannot be weaponized as an attack-surface discovery tool — visit it directly when you need it.
